21 Day Antarctica Itinerary

Day 1: Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Welcome to Puerto Madryn, Argentina! Your journey commences in northern Patagonia, renowned for its sandy coastline teeming with marine life. You have the flexibility to arrive at any time today. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel, settle in, and relish some leisure time in "the gateway to the Peninsula Valdes." Take a stroll around the town, indulge in local Argentinean delicacies, or simply unwind by the coast, gazing out at the sea. Until the optional icebreaker meeting later in the evening, you have the freedom to explore as freely as an albatross. Following your briefing, consider gathering with fellow travelers for dinner at a nearby restaurant, where you can speculate about the adventures awaiting you on your imminent Antarctic expedition.

Please be aware: Your voyage fare includes an arrival transfer from the airport on Day 1.

Day 2: Embarkation in Puerto Madryn

Today, you'll embark on the Ocean Endeavour, your home for the next 20 days. Begin your voyage by setting sail towards the Falkland Islands, where you'll commence your journey following in the footsteps of Shackleton. Sir Ernest Shackleton is renowned as one of the foremost polar explorers, celebrated for one of the most remarkable survival narratives to have graced Antarctica, if not the entire world. Shackleton spearheaded the British Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition from 1914 to 1916, intending to traverse Antarctica from a base on the Weddell Sea to McMurdo Sound via the South Pole. However, their vessel, the Endurance, became ensnared in ice off the Caird Coast, marking the onset of an epic tale of survival for Shackleton and his crew. Through the skill, optimism, and extraordinary leadership of their team and Captain, every member endured, cementing their legacy amidst the Antarctic's unforgiving terrain.

Day 3 & 4: At Sea

Over the next couple of days, immerse yourself in the offerings and activities aboard your fully equipped expedition vessel as you traverse the vast expanse of the ocean. Delve into history at the library, unwind in the spa and sauna, or admire the passing ice floes from the sundeck. Keep your gaze skyward for sightings of majestic albatrosses on their migratory journey. Stay vigilant for breaching whales and other marine life in the southern seas, and socialize with fellow passengers over drinks at the bar. Engage with a series of lectures and presentations throughout the day, providing insights into the local geography, environment, and wildlife you'll encounter on your journey. These sessions offer valuable preparation for your expedition, offering expert perspectives on the region's dramatic history and potential wildlife encounters. Take full advantage of this opportunity to enrich your understanding while connecting with your knowledgeable expedition team and fellow travelers.

Day 5 & 6: Falkland Islands

As you approach the ruggedly picturesque Falklands archipelago, ensure your camera is at the ready to capture not only the abundant wildlife but also the awe-inspiring landscapes. Comprising two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland, this region offers a rare chance to witness remarkable biological diversity, stunning terrain, and a rich history. The Falklands are a haven for wildlife photographers, boasting the world's largest colony of black-browed albatrosses and hosting breeding grounds for five species of penguins. Explore the quaint capital of Stanley and delve into the intriguing and sometimes controversial history of the Falkland Islands. Keep an eye out for a variety of bird species near the town, including southern giant petrels, Falkland steamer ducks, kelp gulls, and dolphin gulls, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Venture further to discover dramatic landscapes featuring wetlands, lakes, and rolling peaks across the archipelago's other captivating islands. Weather permitting, your exploration may extend to Saunders Island, the second largest in the Falklands. Here, at The Neck, a narrow peninsula with sandy beaches and subtle cliffs, you'll encounter colonies of gentoo, Magellanic, king, and rockhopper penguins amidst breathtaking surroundings.

Day 7 & 8: At Sea

Bid adieu to the Falkland Islands as you ready yourself for the upcoming adventure in South Georgia, brimming with captivating history, geology, and of course, wildlife. From the outer decks, take in panoramic views of the horizon, keeping watch for seabirds and aquatic silhouettes beneath the waves. Make the most of this time at sea by attending presentations led by the expert team, delving into the area's dramatic history and remarkable marine wildlife encounters. These leisurely days provide ample opportunity to exchange stories with fellow expeditioners, whether relaxing in the jacuzzi or enjoying lunch together at Polaris restaurant.

Day 9, 10, 11 & 12: South Georgia

Upon reaching South Georgia, you'll be greeted by dark volcanic beaches set against the backdrop of hanging glaciers, while local king penguins make their nests amidst tussock grass. Over the ensuing days, embark on explorations across the island, once inhabited by whalers and solitary explorers, now safeguarded as a protected area with dedicated Antarctic research teams. Dive deeper into the narrative of Sir Ernest Shackleton during various land excursions, particularly focusing on the shores where Shackleton landed his crew of the James Caird in a desperate bid for help for those stranded on Elephant Island. Retrace Shackleton's footsteps and pay homage at his grave within the ex-whaling station of Grytviken, nestled on the island's eastern side. Wander amidst the awe-inspiring South Georgian light, surrounded by countless king penguins, contemplating the extraordinary resilience displayed by Shackleton and his crew in their fight for survival. Your Expedition Team will enrich these experiences through educational presentations, daily excursions, and optional paid activities like kayaking and photography lessons.

With a range of landing sites at their disposal, the crew of the Ocean Endeavour will carefully select the most optimal stops, taking into account factors such as weather conditions, accessibility, and potential wildlife sightings. Iconic destinations like Neko Harbour, Orne Harbour, and Paradise Bay will also be on the Captain's itinerary.

Day 19 & 20: At Sea, Drake Passage

As you acclimate to sea life once again in anticipation of the return voyage across the Drake Passage, the Ocean Endeavour will chart its course northward toward Cape Horn and your final destination in Ushuaia, Argentina. Utilize this time to engage in additional onboard lectures and travel discussions, and take pleasure in the voyage slideshow featuring captivating images captured by the Expedition Photographer – yours to relish and exchange after the expedition.
