When Can I visit Northern Chile?

The Atacama Desert and the northern regions of Chile are wonderful at any time of the year. We'll go through its pros and cons season by season so you can choose the one you prefer to share with your family, friends, or plan a romantic getaway with your partner, why not?:

Spring (September to November)

Pros:

  • Seeds carried by the wind lie dormant for long periods until finally, with a little moisture, they transform what was once a barren desert into a lush garden, teeming with flowers stretching to the horizon. An amazing scene of bright colors.
  • Crowds are less dense compared to the peak summer season.

Cons:

  • As spring is a popular season, prices may be higher and accommodation reservations may be harder to come by.
  • Some activities may be limited due to seasonal maintenance of certain attractions.

"Spring in the Atacama Desert is a spectacle of colors and renewed life. It's the perfect time to enjoy the region's natural beauty with a touch of exclusivity and comfort in the finest lodges." - Sofía García, Luxury Traveler.

Summer (December to February)

Pros:

  • Days are longer, allowing for more time to explore and engage in outdoor activities.
  • The warm weather invites relaxation in lodge pools and enjoying cocktails at sunset.
  • Clear nights offer ideal conditions for stargazing in the desert's night sky.

Cons:

  • Daytime temperatures can be extremely high, making some outdoor activities less comfortable.
  • Increased tourists may result in crowds at some attractions and lodges.

"Summer in the Atacama Desert is a luxury experience under the desert sun. Make the most of the endless days to explore the diversity of landscapes and relax in the region's exclusive lodges." - Alejandro Martínez, Luxury Traveler.

Autumn (March to May)

Pros:

  • Temperatures are pleasant and cooler, making outdoor activities more comfortable.
  • Crowds decrease as the tourist season winds down, allowing for a quieter, more relaxed experience.
  • Autumn colors paint the landscape with golden and reddish tones, creating a charming and photogenic atmosphere.

Cons:

  • Some attractions may close for maintenance or renovation before the peak summer season.
  • Temperatures may drop at night, so it's advisable to bring warm clothing for evening activities.

"Autumn in the Atacama Desert is a treat for the senses. Enjoy the serenity of the off-season while staying in luxurious lodges and immersing yourself in the desert's natural beauty." - María López, Luxury Traveler.

Winter (June to August)

Pros:

  • Nights are cold and clear, providing optimal conditions for stargazing and astrophotography.
  • Daytime temperatures are mild and pleasant, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and exploration.
  • Lodges often offer special rates and promotions during the winter low season.

Cons:

  • Temperatures can drop considerably at night, so it's important to be prepared with warm clothing.
  • Some activities may be limited due to fewer tourists and seasonal maintenance of certain attractions.

Chile has been blessed with such diverse geography and climatic variety, perfect for the development of wine valleys. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carménère, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Riesling, Malbec, Tempranillo are the wine varieties you can enjoy

At the craft fair near San Pedro square, we recommend bags of herbs and plants like chachacoma, and jars of chañar arrope, a natural syrup not only relieving coughs but also used in desserts

After visiting the Tatio geysers field, the best treat is enjoying goat cheese empanadas in Machuca, a practically abandoned town with an impressive church

Recommended Excursions in the Atacama region

Some recommendations to make the most of this authentic natural amusement park:

Geysers del Tatio

A must-visit is the geysers of the Tatio volcano, the highest geothermal field in the world - located 4,300 meters above sea level - and the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The thermal activity in Tatio covers an area of approximately 10 km2 and includes more than 80 types of geysers between fumaroles, water, boiling mud ponds, ensuring a phenomenal relaxation.

One of the many virtues of this desert setting is the absence of light pollution, enabling a spectacular view of the sky ideal for stargazing. The team at Voyagers Travel can help you add an astronomical outing into your itinerary. Visting with an expert will ensure you fully enjoy the wonders of the night sky.

All their guides are highly trained and passionate professionals who will ensure you receive the best possible experience.

Baltinache Hidden Lagoons

There are seven bodies of transparent turquoise water, which in contrast with the white of the Cordillera de la Sal, make this one of the most incredible landscapes in the Atacama Desert.

The salt concentration is so high that you can easily float on the surface, just like in the Dead Sea! You'll get the best photographs and connect with the unique energy of the place. We recommend taking a guided tour with logistic support.
