Nestled in the highlands of the northern Andes, around 100km from Quito, you’ll find Otavalo, home to one of the most famous markets in whole South America.
Thanks to the vibrant market and local indigenous culture, Otavalo is to be found on several Ecuador travel itineraries. Here visitors can get a real taste of Ecuadorian life, haggle with stallholders and see the fantastic textiles and traditional crafts produced in this part of the country.
At its biggest, the market takes over around one-third of the town, with stalls selling traditional costumes, musical instruments, spices and food stretching as far as the eye can see.
In Ecuador, Quito is the main starting point for tours to Otavalo, so the first day of your trip will involve traveling from the capital to the Highlands.
Once you arrive, we’ll take you on a guided tour through the indigenous market, pointing out local specialties and helping you to understand the culture and history of this extraordinary place.
For your dinner and accommodation, you can choose between a historic hacienda, traditional inn or even an indigenous family.
On the second day of your Ecuador travel adventure, we’ll take you to see Cuicocha, a breathtakingly beautiful lake at the foot of the Cotacachi Volcano. Take in the spectacle of the vista or visit the small indigenous community who live on the lake’s shore.
A visit to Otavalo and the northern highlands will help to complete your Ecuador travel experience, and leave you with some fantastic memories that you’ll treasure forever. A great compliment to our Galapagos travel programs too.
