Legendary route 40 the "Other Patagonia" - Tour

An expedition for adventurers. Its purpose is to discover the “other Patagonia”: the inhospitable, rough, magical and enigmatic Patagonia. The charm and splendour of road 40 become real, as one understands that solitude and distance are the very same essence of the trip.

 

Its purpose of the tour is to discover the “other Patagonia”. This program allows us to travel the legendary Route 40 Patagonia Argentina, with its long rubble roads crossing the patagonia steppe. We will visit the Cueva de las Manos (Cave of the Hands), with 10.000 year old paintings of human hands and animals, in the beatiful canyon of the Pinturas River. We will travel the canyon of the Oro River with their view of the Cerro San Lorenzo, the highest in the Patagonia.

 

Afterwards we will visit Argentina’s most virginal park: Perito Moreno. Finally, we will visit El Chaltén, one of the youngest towns and Argentina’s trekking capital. We will be dazzled by one of the world’s marvels: the Perito Moreno Glacier, declared World’s Heritage.

We will discover the inhospitable, rough, magical and enigmatic Patagonia. Only those who see the blue lakes and green woods discover the charm and splendour of road 40, as one understands, step by step, that solitude and distance are the very same essence of the trip. 

9 Day Patagonia Itinerary

Day 1: Comodoro Rivadavia - Los Antiguos

The group meet at 2 pm at the Restaurant of the Comodoro Rivadavia Airport. Our journey begins from the town of Comodoro Rivadavia. Southern 70 Km from there we visit the town of Caleta Olivia skirting the San Matías Gulf on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

We will cross the Patagonia to the West to move away from the sea and to get the views of the Cordillera de los Andes range, in the town of Los Antiguos, located on the southern shore of the Buenos Aires Lake, and to 2 Km from the border with Chile. (400 km/250miles). 

Day 2: Cueva de las Manos. Los Antiguos – Lago Posadas

We leave from Los Antiguos town toward the south to arrive to the of the Pinturas River canyon, to walk on them to visit the Cueva de las manos (Cave of the Hands) an imposing place with 10.000 year old paintings of human hands and animals. Then we continue to lodge in the small and picturesque Lago Posadas town. (260 km/160 miles). 

Day 3: Cerro San Lorenzo. Río Oro Canyon

We transfer in the morning to Oro River Canyon, where we trek for 5 hours between its high stone walls until get a wondreful view of the Cerro San Lorenzo, the highest Patagonian Hill (3706 mts/12159 ft). We return to Lago Posadas to enjoy the contrast between the blue waters of Posadas Lake and the green waters from Pueyrredon Lake, shared each other by only 100 meters (328 ft) of land. 

Day 4: Lago Posadas – El Chalten

After breakfast we depart in our bus to El Chalten. We travel a long track in which we could appreciate the different birds and fauna of Patagonia. We stop to have lunch at a tipical Patagonia saloon close to Cardiel Lake. We estimate to arrive at El Chalten around 7 pm. (550 Km/341 miles) 

Day 5: Trekking Day - Fitz Roy

Breakfast. Free trekking day. This will be a trekking-day. We will go through the path that leads to the base of the Fitz Roy Mount, the Los Tres lagoon. This will take about 8 hours. It's a steep path that ascends about 1200 metres and goes through the forest, inwhich we will see the wonderful Lake Capri. If weather conditions are favourable we will be able to see the magnificent view of the Fitz Roy Mount and Torre Hill. Transfer from Chalten to Calafate (200km).

Day 6: Alice Ranch - Typical Lamb Barbecue

Breakfast. During the afternoon we will go to Alice Ranch to enjoy a cup of tea. We will trek across the area. Afterwards we will savour a typical lamb barbecue and attend to a local show.

Day 7: Perito Moreno Glacier & Navegation to the Ice Floe's Canal

Breakfast. We'll visit one of the greatest marvels of the world: the Perito Moreno Glacier, declared World's heritage. Its characteristic is the breaking of its external walls due to the pressure of the water of the river. We’ll then go to the floating quay of the southern branch of the Argentinian Lake, to navigate across the Ice Floe’s Canal up to the front of the Glaciar Perito Moreno to see it’s typical iceslides.

Day 8: Navegation to Argentine Lake

Breakfast. We'll go to Punta Bandera to make for Argentino Lake. First we'll go to the northern part of the lake where we'll see the icebergs floating adrift and then to the Upsala Glacier. Then we'll go back to Onelli Bay where we'll go ashore.

Through a forested path we'll reach one of the most beautiful panoramic points of the tour: the confluence of the Glaciers Onelli, Agassiz and Bolado. On our way back to the hotel we will be able to see the Boca del Diablo.

Day 9: Breakfast.

Transfer to Calafate Airport.
