Overview of Peru’s Climate and Geography

Peru showcases a blend of climates and landscapes. From coastal deserts to lush rainforests, it offers something for everyone....

Coastal regions

The coastal region of Peru stretches along the western edge of the country. The climate here is arid and desert-like, making it unique in its own right. Major cities include Lima, Nazca, Trujillo, and Chiclayo—all worth visiting.

"Lima's beaches are perfect during January with temperatures ranging from 66°F to 81°F," I always tell friends. From December to April, the weather is optimal for exploring these coastal areas without too much rain disrupting your plans.

I recall a trip to Nazca where I marveled at the ancient geoglyphs. It felt like stepping back in time. Areas like Lima’s old town offer captivating colonial architecture and vibrant street life that can keep you busy for several days.

Andean highlands

High in the Andean highlands, the weather can change fast. The dry season from May to October is best for trekking. Most days are sunny and clear, making it perfect for hiking. I recall a trek to Machu Picchu during this time—no rain and stunning views.

The Andean region includes places like Cusco and Ollantaytambo. These spots are rich in history with ancient Incan ruins everywhere you look. June to August sees many festivals here, including the famous Inti Raymi.

This celebration of the Sun God brings colorful parades and dances... something everyone should see once!

Amazon basin

The Amazon basin covers nearly two-thirds of Peru. I found it to be the largest rainforest globally, filled with wonders. The dry season runs from May to October, making it ideal for adventures.

During my visit to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Tambopata National Reserve, I saw pink river dolphins and playful monkeys. Manu National Park amazed me with its range—elevations from 150 meters to 4,200 meters! There are so many birds and reptiles too...

You never know what you might spot next!

The Best Times to Visit Peru

Choosing the right time is key for a great trip. Let's dive into when's best depending on your plans....

Dry season for trekking (May to October)

Dry season brings sunny skies and clear views. May through October is perfect for hiking in Peru. Trekking trails like the Inca Trail, Salkantay, and Cordilleras Huayhuash stay dry and easy to walk.

It's also prime time to visit Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Rainbow Mountain, and Lake Titicaca.

Sunny conditions make winter (June to August) ideal for trekking. Trails are less muddy—you can enjoy your hike without slipping around! Crowds peak during these months though, so booking early helps avoid hassle.

Spring (September-November) offers fewer tourists but some initial rains—still great for quieter trails.

Wet season for fewer tourists (November to April)

I’ve always loved the quieter trails during Peru's wet season from November to April. Most people flock to Machu Picchu in the dry months, leaving these months less crowded. Yes, it rains more often—especially in January and February—but that means everything looks so lush and green.

Travel costs drop, too. Flights are cheaper, hotels have lower rates, and you can snag some great deals. Festivals like the Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria bring a burst of color and music to Puno every February.

Semana Santa is another highlight with grand parades and street celebrations.

Despite the rain, trekking isn’t off-limits—it’s just different. The Inca Trail can still be done but expect muddy paths and fewer fellow hikers along Huayna Picchu or Choquequirao trails.

And if you enjoy vibrant scenery without large crowds, this season might be your perfect match!

Best Times for Specific Activities

Trekking in the Andes (June to August)

Trekking in the Andes from June to August offers stunning views. The weather is perfect for hiking, with clear skies and dry trails. In Cusco, temperatures reach 64°F during the day but drop to 32°F at night, so pack layers.

Popular spots like Machu Picchu get crowded this time of year. I always start early to beat the rush and catch that first light on Huayna Picchu. Even with more tourists, the spectacular scenery makes it all worthwhile.

Surfing on the Pacific Coast (September to November)

Trekking the Andes is thrilling, but surfing on Peru's Pacific Coast from September to November is just as exciting. The waves here are something else. In Huanchaco, you find perfect swell from November to May.

Chicama has its peak in June with strong swells crashing in—you can ride these forever.

Huanchaco offers a variety of waves for all skill levels. Beginners will love Máncora’s mellow surf conditions, while Lobitos caters to everyone, no matter your experience. San Gallán lies within Paracas National Reserve and boasts fantastic right-breaking waves—a dream spot indeed! So grab your board and hit the water; there's nothing like riding these Peruvian waves!

Exploring the Amazon (December to February)

Exploring the Amazon from December to February offers a wet and wild adventure. Rain pours almost daily. This makes for lush, green scenery but also muddy trails, so it is ideal for visiting by cruise as the smaller tributaries are flooded and you can explore the rainforest from the comfort of your skiff. Average temperatures hover around 86°F (30°C).

High water levels can reach up to 16 feet (5 meters). Expect extreme rainfall in February. Tapir and capybaras become harder to spot in thick foliage.

Traveling during these months means fewer tourists. Many animals love this time of year too. Birds sing louder, monkeys swing freely, and rivers teem with life—even if it's hidden sometimes! Rafting can be thrilling though—surging waters rush faster than usual...

It's not for faint hearts but well worth it!
