Summary of Activities (2023-24 Season)

Embark on a 20-day expedition aboard the Magellan Explorer, venturing to the Falkland Islands (Las Malvinas), South Georgia, and Antarctica. Explore the Falklands, observing captivating native wildlife such as the Rockhopper Penguin and Black-browed albatrosses. Immerse yourself in the island's rich history by meeting its multi-generational inhabitants. Sail to South Georgia, home to one of the world's largest king penguin colonies and serene elephant seals along the shores. Cruise through the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands, exploring sites in the Antarctic Sound and Gerlache Strait. This extraordinary expedition promises a unique and unforgettable experience.

20 Day Antarctica Itinerary

Day 1: Port Stanley

Airport pick-up in Port Stanley, exploration of the town, and boarding.

Day 2: Saunders Island & Carcass Island

We delight in the extensive white-sand beach on our morning excursion to Saunders Island, offering a true wilderness encounter. The primary highlights include observing rockhopper penguins, witnessing nesting black-browed albatrosses, and encountering sub-Antarctic gentoo penguins. In the afternoon, our journey takes us to Carcass Island, where we have the option to embark on an easy hike to the settlement, engage in bird watching, and partake in a traditional Falklands tea experience.

Day 3: Bleaker Island

In the morning, we will land at Bleaker Island, a natural reserve with a famous area featuring a large variety of birds. In the afternoon, we head to South Georgia.

Day 4 & 5: At Sea

Day 6: Elsehul Bay

Depending on sea conditions over the previous days, arrival is planned for the afternoon. Provided we receive approval from the South Georgia government, we plan to do an evening Zodiac cruise at Elsehul Bay.

Day 7: Grytviken & Fortuna Bay

Our initial landing spot is Grytviken, where we go through Customs and proceed to explore the historical site, including the South Georgia Museum and Ernest Shackleton's grave. In the afternoon, we make a landing at Fortuna Bay/Stromness to observe king penguins. This visit provides an opportunity to delve into the details of Shackleton's expedition, with an optional 2-3 hour "Shackleton walk" available for those interested.

Day 8: Gold Harbour & Cooper Bay

In the morning, we plan a landing at Gold Harbour, a spectacular location with king penguins, elephant seals, and hanging glaciers. There are also sooty albatrosses here. In the afternoon and on a Zodiac cruise, we visit Cooper Bay to see macaroni penguins.

Day 9: St Andrews Bay & Ocean Harbour 

The morning adventure leads us to St Andrews Bay, where we encounter the largest king penguin colony and observe elephant seal bulls. In the afternoon, we set out on a Zodiac cruise and make a landing at Ocean Harbour. This site boasts a shipwreck and remnants of the whaling industry, providing fascinating highlights to explore.

Day 10: Prion Island & Salisbury Plain

During the morning, the itinerary includes a visit to Prion Island, offering an opportunity to witness nesting wandering albatrosses. In the afternoon, the journey continues to Salisbury Plain, where we encounter more king penguins amidst stunning landscapes.

Day 11 & 12: At Sea

Day 13: Elephant Island

In the afternoon, the itinerary takes us to Elephant Island. Although the likelihood of making a landing is very low, we will have the opportunity to view the island from the ship. If sea conditions permit, there is also the possibility of experiencing it from a Zodiac.

Day 14, 15, 16 & 17: Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands 

Sail along the Antarctic Peninsula and navigate through the South Shetland Islands, exploring sites in the Antarctic Sound and the Gerlache Strait. The expedition may encompass visits to remarkable locations such as Gourdin Island, Brown Bluff, Half Moon Island, Deception Island, Wilhelmina Bay, the Lemaire Channel, Cuverville Island, the Melchior Islands, and other awe-inspiring destinations.

Day 18 & 19: At Sea

Day 20: Ushuaia

The journey concludes with our arrival in Ushuaia, where passengers will disembark.

  • Accommodation, meals, excursions, and transfers other than those included in the itinerary and the Contingency Plan corresponding to each voyage. Specifically, dinner in Punta Arenas upon return from Antarctica is not included.

20 Day Antarctica cruise activities

Sea Kayaking
Under full instruction from your sea kayaking guide, experience true tranquillity as you paddle through clinking ice floes and realise the enormity of the surrounding scenery. Look out for breaching whales, lounging seals and penguins zipping alongside your kayak. Some experience is required.
Ice Camping
Camp out on the ice and experience the silence which blankets the continent by night. This is your chance to completely connect with this ethereal ice world – wrap up warm and embrace the Antarctic elements.
Snowshoeing
Get a spring in your step when you slip on a pair of snowshoes in Antarctica. Enabling you to easily scale gentle slopes, this unique activity allows you to access hard to reach places and seek out the most impressive views.
Photography
Learn to capture wildlife and landscape shots in a small group photography program, including critiquing sessions and editing classes. Plus, Explorer Boat excursions with a dedicated photography expert on landings.
Explorer Boats
Achieve the best views and photographs from a forward facing Explorer Boats. They allow you to sit comfortably and securely while crackling through the ice-strewn waters. Look out for wildlife such as penguins, seals and whales as you cruise.
Yoga
It doesn’t get more serene than complimentary yoga classes to the tune of glacial scenery. Join the most unique exercise setting in the world after a day of exploration. Classes are regular but are dependent on weather conditions and swell.
