Explore Antarctica: Hybrid Cruise & Science Voyage | Travel News

Mar-09-2026

A 2027 Antarctic expedition is being planned as a hybrid cruise and research program, placing ocean scientists and veteran explorers alongside travelers during a 10-day voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula. The sailing, titled “Antarctica: Ocean (Re)Imagined,” is scheduled to depart December 7, 2027 from Ushuaia aboard the expedition ship Le Lyrial.

The itinerary will cross the Drake Passage and continue along the Antarctic Peninsula, combining traditional Zodiac cruises and wildlife landings with a structured onboard science program. Researchers are expected to conduct demonstrations, explain ongoing polar studies, and share observations gathered during the journey.

The voyage is being developed in collaboration with scientists from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a major independent ocean research organization known for its work in polar and deep-sea environments. The goal is to turn part of the trip into a working science platform where passengers can see how ocean data is collected and interpreted in one of the most climate-sensitive regions on Earth.

Travelers interested in expedition cruising in Antarctica can also explore vessels such as Le Commandant Charcot, a luxury icebreaker specifically designed for polar exploration and scientific missions.

Science program planned at sea

Researchers from Woods Hole plan to bring elements of their Southern Ocean work directly onto the vessel. This could include deploying simple oceanographic instruments from the ship, discussing satellite and modeling tools used to plan modern expeditions, and explaining how measurements of temperature, salinity, currents, and sea ice feed into global climate models.

The project extends a partnership between the cruise operator and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution that began earlier in the decade. A 2025 voyage to the Weddell Sea focused on emperor penguins also included glaciologists and early-career researchers studying ice-ocean interactions while presenting lectures and demonstrations to passengers.

Members of The Explorers Club are also expected to participate in the broader polar program. Fellows and grant recipients from the organization have been joining select voyages to share accounts from historic expeditions and current field research. Specific speakers for the 2027 sailing have not yet been announced.

Expedition format on board and ashore

The expedition ship Le Lyrial typically carries about 200 passengers on Antarctic departures. Built for expedition cruising, the ice-strengthened vessel balances smaller capacity with the ability to navigate ice-filled waters and remote landing sites.

During the voyage, onboard talks are expected to cover Southern Ocean circulation, sea ice formation, and Antarctica’s role in global sea level and carbon storage. Evening briefings may also summarize any observations collected that day, including water column measurements or sea ice conditions recorded during the crossing.

Shore visits along the Antarctic Peninsula are planned during the austral summer, when conditions usually allow for a mix of landings and Zodiac outings near glaciers, rocky headlands, and wildlife colonies. Expedition staff follow Antarctic tourism guidelines that limit the number of visitors at landing sites.

The approach reflects a broader trend in Antarctic tourism toward voyages that incorporate research, citizen science, and expert interpretation. Other expedition ships operating in the region include vessels such as Le Boréal and L’Austral, which also combine exploration with sustainability-focused expedition cruising.

By merging field research with passenger expeditions, the organizers aim to enhance travelers’ understanding of scientific monitoring in the Southern Ocean while preserving traditional elements of Antarctic exploration, such as wildlife encounters and glacier landings.
