Castillo Mountain trekking tour - Patagonia

Castillo Mountain National Reserve was created in 1970.  The predominant native tree of the reserve is the lenga, and can be found forming pure lenga forests at altitudes between 600 and 1,200 m (1,968 and 3,936 ft) above sea level.

With its aim to protect the land, the park reforested around a thousand hectares (2,200 acres) with exotic species. Among the animals and birds that live here, there are guemuls, guanacos, foxes, pumas, condors, cachañas (small parrots), eagles, etc.

The most beautiful sites are Cerro Castillo (2,320 m. or 7,609 ft. above sea level), Cerro Iglesia (1,750m. or 5,740 ft.), and Conde Stone, a rock shaped over the years by natural elements to look like a human profile.

From Coyhaique, we invite you to travel with us along the Austral Highway, until reaching the Castillo Mountain National Reserve, with nearly 180.000hectares (445000 acres) its name stands for the mountain range that stands more than 2,000 meters (6,280 ft), with a silhouette that resembles a castle and whose peaks are always covered in snow, next to where the Ibáñez River arises.

The Program's level of difficulty is moderate.

4 Day Patagonia Itinerary

Day 1: Coyhaique -Cerro Castillo National Reserve

Depart from Coyhaique by automobile to get to the starting point "Las Orquetas Grandes", in the Cerro Castillo National Reserve.
Stage 1, consists of an easy 5 to 6 hour hike, with a slight upward incline throughout the La Lima River Valley where we will reach a view of the glaciers and sharp mountain peaks. Set up camp by the Turbio River.

Day 2: Cerro Castillo National Reserve

Stage 2 involves a 5 or 6 hour hike with more prominent uphills through the forest. We will cross rocky areas where the glacier dragged along rocks all the way to Peñón Pass. Continuing on the trail surrounded by numerous cascades we will arrive to El Bosque stream where we will have to wade through. Camping in the forest by the river.

Day 3: Cerro Castillo National Reserve

In stage 3, which will last about 6 to 7 hours, we will hike up and downhill throughout the El Bosque river valley to reach the Grande Lagoon at the foot of the tall, rocky walls of the Mountain. Set up camp. Hopefully, there will be time to take a walk to visit the icy areas.

Day 4: Cerro Castillo National Reserve - Coyhaique

Stage 4, 4 to 5 hours long, involves a descent through the Parada river valley or in El Bosque valley until we arrive to a road where there will be transportation waiting for us. Return to Coyhaique.
