Galapagos Green Turtle

Essential Information on the Galapagos Green Turtle

The Galápagos Green Turtle is unique in that it is the only species to nest on the archipelago and is rarely found elsewhere in the world. In the Galápagos, these turtles are plentiful and frequently spotted during snorkeling and diving trips along the coasts of the islands.

Like all turtles, their life begins as tiny hatchlings from up to 200 eggs laid by a female. Alone, they must evade numerous predators such as cormorants, albatrosses, gulls, frigatebirds, crabs, hawks, and more as they make their way to the sea. Only a small fraction survive the journey to the ocean, where they still face dangers from sharks and frigatebirds. Those that make it to the open ocean continue to struggle for survival and growth, taking more than 30 years to reach adulthood.

In the water, Galápagos Green Turtles are graceful and elegant swimmers, often seen gliding gently through the clear waters. They are particularly strong swimmers, capable of traveling long distances at speeds of 30 mph or more. Adults primarily follow a vegetarian diet, while juveniles are more opportunistic, trying to eat a variety of things. The largest turtles can weigh over 280 lb (130 kg).

Galápagos Green Turtles are officially listed as “endangered,” primarily due to human activities. They have been hunted for their shells and meat and suffer accidental drownings when caught in fishing nets. Invasive species also increase predation on hatchlings, further threatening their numbers. Fortunately, the trade of Galápagos Green Turtle parts is now banned, significantly reducing deliberate hunting.

The Galápagos also hosts the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle, a species at high risk. The protected National Park of the Galápagos serves as a crucial sanctuary for a small but important population. Globally, Hawksbill numbers are declining, but the waters around the Galápagos and the coast of Ecuador maintain a stable population.
