Tierra Atacama in San Pedro de Atacama has officially reopened after a year-long closure for a US$20 million (approximately AU$33.5 million) renovation aimed at elevating the property to a new benchmark in luxury travel within Chile.
Surrounded by stunning natural scenery, the lodge offers sweeping views of the Licancabur Volcano, the Andes, and expansive sand dunes—all visible from the main lodge and guest suites through floor-to-ceiling windows.
The ambitious redesign was led by Tierra Hotels’ founder, Miguel Purcell. The renovation preserves the property’s deep cultural roots and close ties to the San Pedro de Atacama community—descendants of the Inca and Aymara peoples, whose presence in the region spans over 10,000 years.
Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into thoughtfully reimagined spaces that fuse comfort with authenticity. The interiors reflect traditional craftsmanship and design elements that celebrate the heritage of the Atacama Desert, while the open-plan architecture blurs the line between indoors and the dramatic, moonlike terrain.
The number of suites has been reduced from 32 to 28 to create a more intimate atmosphere. Four new luxury suites now include private plunge pools and come with a personal vehicle and guide, offering a heightened sense of exclusivity and personalized service.
Highlights of the redesign include the use of locally sourced travertine marble from Calama in guest areas and the incorporation of deep blue tones to echo the surrounding desert hues. Over 40 Chilean artists and designers contributed bespoke pieces, enriching the space with cultural depth and artisanal beauty.
Dining has also been enhanced with new open-flame grill stations adjacent to the main restaurant, where guests can savor dishes inspired by local traditions against a stunning Andes backdrop. A curated wine cellar showcases top-tier Chilean wines, while an open-concept kitchen brings guests closer to the culinary action, creating an inviting, communal dining atmosphere.
The updated spa now includes a couple’s treatment room, enhancing the lodge’s wellness offerings. A new sunken lounge was added to encourage guest interaction and stargazing—fitting, as the Atacama Desert is considered one of the best places on Earth for observing the night sky.
Originally built in 2008 by renowned Chilean architects Rodrigo Searle and Matias Gonzalez on the site of a former cattle corral, Tierra Atacama still retains original adobe brick walls from a 150-year-old bull pen. For the 2025 renovation, Baillie Lodges once again teamed up with Matias Gonzalez to enhance the lodge with sleek, modern updates while preserving its cultural and historical essence.
Interior designer Carolina Delpiano, who crafted the original designs for Tierra properties, returned to lead the refreshed interiors. Meanwhile, landscape architect Teresa Moller ensured the preservation and integration of native vegetation, enhancing the lodge’s harmony with its natural surroundings.
“We’ve been intentional about using local materials, artisans, and services throughout the project to ensure the community is deeply involved and benefits from our work,” said founder Miguel Purcell.
“It’s been an honor to steward Tierra Atacama’s legacy and reposition the lodge at the forefront of Chile’s luxury travel scene. We’re proud to deliver an experience that blends exceptional comfort with sustainability and a genuine connection to the land and people of San Pedro de Atacama—setting the tone for the future of immersive travel in Chile.”
