The best scenic views in the Galapagos Islands

2018-03-05

Established as a national park in 1959 and also on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list, it’s unsurprising that the Galapagos Islands are home to some of the most spectacular views in the world. In part, this explains the popularity of Galapagos Islands vacations. But just what is the pick of the scenic views that you simply can’t miss?

Aerial view of Sombrero Chino Island

Sombrero Chino is a small but perfectly formed volcanic crater is best seen from the air. With its almost perfect cone shape and circular crater, it’s a great climb but you only get a true perspective of its mystery from above.

Marine iguanas on Santa Cruz Island

Along with the famous tortoises, the islands’ most famous inhabitants might be the incredible marine iguanas. These unique animals can only be found in a few bays around the Galapagos Islands, and seeing them up close and personal is something you will never forget.

Birdlife on Isla Seymour

No Galapagos Islands vacations are complete without visiting the charismatic blue-footed booby colonies on Seymour Island. For a truly spectacular view, try and visit during the breeding season. With huge colonies of birds that exhibit very little fear of man, you really won’t find anything like this anywhere else on the planet.

View from Bartolome

Lying just off the east coast of San Salvador, this small 300-acre island is one of the most photographed islands in the whole archipelago. A steep climb up Cerro Bartolome is rewarded with stunning views over lava fields, craters and out over the jutting Pinnacle Rock.

Lava flows on Fernandina

One of the most remote islands in the Galapagos, Fernandina is not a natural stopping off point on most Galapagos Islands vacations. However, the spectacular lava flows, penguins, and marine iguanas make this well worth a visit. One of the most recently formed islands, this is a unique place, even by Galapagos standards.

Views under the water

On Galapagos Islands vacations, not all the best views are on the land. One of the ‘must do’ activities is to go snorkeling or diving while you are in the Galapagos. Under the water, you will be treated to a vista like no other. Penguins, seals, shark varieties and other marine life will enchant and enthrall. Just don’t forget to take your underwater camera with you when you dive.

You can access and enjoy many of these and plenty of other spectacular Galapagos views from onboard the Galapagos Legend, one of the most in-demand cruising vessels in waters around the islands.

And if you really can’t wait to check out the views, you can now Google Streetview the Galapagos for a taste of what you are missing.
