Galapagos Martin

Essential Information on the Galapagos Martin

This black bird is the sole member of the swallow family found throughout the Galápagos Islands.

The Martin possesses an impressive skill for catching fast-flying insects mid-flight. When feeding, it's often easier to spot the males, as they are much more visually striking compared to the females. Listen for the delightful range of sounds the Martin produces, including warbles, twittering, and high-pitched alarms.

Martins can be observed in both highland and coastal areas, with the best viewing spots being Tagus Cove, Punta Moreno, and the Sierra Negra volcano on Isabela Island.

Despite its striking appearance, there has been limited research on this bird, leading to scarce information about its population. Unfortunately, the Martin is classified as endangered, with fewer than 500 individuals remaining.
