Great Blue Heron

Essential Information on the Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron is the largest heron in the Galápagos Islands, standing nearly 3 feet (1 meter) tall with an impressive wingspan of over 6 feet (2 meters). Its distinctive slate-blue feathers, combined with a grey neck and bright yellow bill, make it a striking sight in the skies.

In the Galápagos, you'll also encounter the Lava Heron and Yellow-crowned Night Heron. The Great Blue Heron primarily feeds on small fish, crabs, lizards, young iguanas, and even fledgling birds. These large wading birds rely on their keen eyesight to hunt in deep waters, often swallowing their prey whole, though this can occasionally lead to regurgitation if the meal gets stuck.

Typically solitary, Great Blue Herons in the Galápagos nest alone throughout the year. They are frequently observed during panga rides through mangroves and other intertidal zones like tidal pools and protected shores, as they prefer habitats near water. Spotting one of these magnificent birds either while feeding or in flight is a memorable experience to capture both in memory and on camera, making them a highlight of a Galápagos cruise.
